Overlock and coverstitch sewing machine bernette b48

The bernette 48 is the top model in the Funlock series and is a combination of an overlock and a coverstitch machine. It offers a total of 23 stitches: 15 overlock stitches, 3 coverstitches, 4 combo stitches and 1 chain stitch, the overlock stitches with a stitch width of up to 7 mm. The threading is facilitated by color-coded threading paths, and a manual threader supports the threading of the needle eye. The looper threads are threaded mechanically. The knife is operated from below and thus  provides not only a clean cutting edge but also safe handling and good visibility to the stitching. The b48 Funlock sews at a speed of up to 1300 stitches per minute.

Threading made simple If you follow the colour-coded threading paths of the bernette 48 Funlock, threading is very straightforward. A separate needle threader and looper threading mechanism also makes this easier.

Large working area for large sewing projects With its 87mm working area, the Bernette 48 Funlock provides plenty of space for larger sewing projects. Another highlight is the bright LED light, which ensures that the area underneath the needle is always well-lit.

Overlock Stitch Modes Performed:

2-thread operations
The main advantage of 2-thread operations is a lightweight seam that doesn’t stiffen the product. Several stitch types can be done with 2 threads: 2-thread overlock, 2-thread rolled hem, and 2-thread flatlock. These are often used to finish fabric edges before sewing a straight seam near the edge.

Rolled overlock stitch
This stitch can be done with 2 or 3 threads. The 2-thread version uses less thread and is less dense—softer and suited for lightweight fabrics. It’s commonly used to finish edges of napkins, tablecloths, or other decorative items, especially scarves. For an even more striking effect, decorative threads can be used in the loopers.

Flatlock stitch
This can also be done with 2 or 3 threads and is often used decoratively. A decorative thread (in the upper looper or needle) adds visual appeal.

3-thread overlock
Available in wide or narrow (babylock) formats. Suitable for knitwear and areas where the seam won’t be heavily stretched. Also used with a blind hem foot or for making a narrow rolled hem.

4-thread overlock
A reinforced overlock for edge finishing. An additional securing seam strengthens the usual 3-thread overlock. Suitable for a broad range of fabrics.

Coverstitch and Combo Stitch Modes Performed:

5-thread stitch
Uses one needle in overlock position and one in coverstitch position. It overlocks and simultaneously secures the seam nearby.

Chainstitch
More flexible than a straight stitch, but not highly elastic. Ideal for fabrics prone to wrinkling. Its speed and strength are excellent for long seams. The 2-thread version reinforces existing seams or can serve as a temporary seam that’s easy to remove.

For decorative effects, use specialty threads (multi-colored, metallic, silk, or embroidery threads). Sewing from the wrong side of the fabric reveals a unique decorative look on the right side.

3 mm and 6 mm coverstitch
Used for very stretchy knits like sportswear, lingerie, and sweaters. These stitches are elastic and won’t break when the fabric stretches, while also serving as decorative elements.

3-needle coverstitch
Uses three needles and the coverstitch looper to create the most stretchable seam among overlock operations. Also ideal for decorative stitching.
