When starting to sew, it’s very important to set up your workspace ergonomically. If possible, choose a spot near a window, as good lighting is essential. When selecting a sewing table, it’s recommended to prioritize tables with plenty of drawers for storing items. This helps prevent constant clutter on the work surface. A very practical option is a table designed to fit into a corner. Another great solution for organizing supplies is transparent plastic boxes—using them ensures you always know where everything is stored.

Another important aspect of the workspace is a comfortable sewing chair. It’s best to choose chairs with five legs and no wheels—these are the safest and most durable. It’s very convenient if the chair can swivel. When buying a chair, be sure to sit on it, even briefly, and check whether your thighs are in a horizontal position and your feet rest firmly on the floor. If not, check whether the chair’s height can be adjusted by turning or using a lever.

Another important tip when setting up your workspace is to ensure proper lighting. The sewing room should be well-lit, ideally with at least two light sources. One of them is the main room lighting—such as a ceiling lamp in the center of the room. The second, more important light source is a flexible desk lamp, usually attached to the edge of the table. This lamp ensures that the workspace has concentrated lighting, minimizing eye strain. Its adjustable mounting allows you to easily set the angle of light and the desired intensity (by increasing the distance from the work surface).

When setting up your workspace and arranging the placement of sewing equipment, it’s recommended to position the ironing board with a steam generator on one side, the cutting table and mannequin on the other, and the sewing machine with its table in between. This way, you’ll be able to easily reach the necessary tools, and your workflow will be smoother.
